KATHMANDU — Nepal Rastra Bank has reissued a public notice clarifying the rules for bringing foreign currency cash into Nepal and taking it out of the country.
The notice, issued by the central bank’s Foreign Exchange Management Department, reiterates provisions under the Foreign Exchange (Regulation) Act, 2019 BS, and the Asset (Money Laundering) Prevention Act, 2064 BS.
According to NRB, Nepali and foreign nationals may bring foreign currency cash worth up to US$5,000 or its equivalent into Nepal without making a customs declaration.
Anyone carrying more than the prescribed amount must declare the currency at customs and obtain certification.
The central bank said the latest notice restates provisions contained in earlier notices issued on 32 Ashad 2075 BS and 26 Chaitra 2075 BS.
NRB has also clarified that Indian currency is subject to separate rules governing permitted denominations and the amount an individual may carry.
Nepali and Indian citizens may bring into Nepal, take out of the country or exchange Indian INR 200 and redesigned INR 500 notes issued and circulated after November 9, 2016.
The maximum permitted amount is INR 25,000 per person, subject to prevailing foreign-exchange regulations.
However, transactions involving the old INR 500 and INR 1,000 notes that were in circulation before India’s demonetisation on November 9, 2016, remain prohibited.
The restriction was reiterated through a notice published in the Nepal Gazette on 28 Poush 2082 BS.
NRB has further clarified that Nepali citizens are not permitted to carry Indian currency from Nepal to a country other than India.
Nepali citizens are also prohibited from bringing Indian currency into Nepal from a third country. Indian currency carried by Nepali citizens must therefore move directly between Nepal and India.
Travellers have been advised to check the permitted denominations and cash limits before travelling and to declare foreign currency at customs when the amount exceeds the prescribed threshold.
The latest notice primarily clarifies and republishes existing requirements. It should not be interpreted as blanket permission to carry Indian currency worth up to US$5,000, as Indian banknotes remain subject to the separate INR 25,000-per-person limit and denomination restrictions.
