In a significant step towards enhancing diplomatic and economic relations, Nepal and Thailand have signed multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) covering tourism, culture, and trade. The agreements were formalized in the presence of Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and his Thai counterpart, Paetongtran Shinawatra, during PM Oli’s official visit to Thailand.

MoUs on Tourism and Culture

Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba signed the MoUs on behalf of Nepal, while Thailand’s Minister of Culture, Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, signed the MoU related to cultural cooperation. Similarly, Minister of Tourism and Sports, Sorawong Thienthong, signed the MoU focused on boosting tourism collaboration between the two nations.

The agreements are expected to foster cultural exchange and enhance tourism opportunities, further strengthening people-to-people relations between Nepal and Thailand. With a shared historical and cultural connection through Buddhism, both countries aim to leverage their heritage to attract more tourists and promote mutual understanding.

Trade and Investment Cooperation

In addition to the government-level agreements, an MoU was also signed between the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) and the Trade Board of Thailand. The agreement seeks to enhance trade relations and promote economic cooperation between Nepal and Thailand.

FNCCI President Chandra Prasad Dhakal and Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade, Sanan Angubolkul, signed the agreement in the presence of the two Prime Ministers. This MoU aims to establish a structured framework for expanding trade and investment, facilitating stronger economic ties.

Furthermore, separate agreements were signed between:

  • Confederation of Nepalese Industries and Federation of Thai Industries
  • Nepal Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Council of Thailand

These agreements are expected to create new opportunities for investment, foster business collaboration, and boost trade volume between Nepal and Thailand.

Educational Collaboration

Another key development during PM Oli’s visit was the signing of an academic partnership between Kathmandu University and Siam University of Thailand. This initiative is expected to facilitate academic exchange programs, joint research opportunities, and knowledge sharing between the two universities, strengthening educational ties between the two nations.

Participation in the BIMSTEC Summit

PM Oli arrived in Thailand on April 1, leading a high-level Nepali delegation to attend the 6th BIMSTEC Summit (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation). His visit underscores Nepal’s commitment to regional cooperation and multilateral partnerships aimed at enhancing trade, security, and cultural exchange among BIMSTEC member nations.

Conclusion

The signing of these MoUs marks a new milestone in Nepal-Thailand relations. Strengthening cooperation in tourism, culture, trade, and education will pave the way for enhanced economic ties and people-to-people exchanges. With these agreements in place, both nations are set to benefit from increased collaboration, investment opportunities, and stronger diplomatic relations in the years to come.
