Raksirang – Nepal Internet Foundation, with support from Internet Society, in collaboration with local stakeholders, successfully completed the Chepang Community Network Handover Program, officially transferring ownership of the network infrastructure to the community. The handover ceremony took place in Raksirang Rural Municipality Ward No. 5 (Chainpur) and Ward No. 6 (Silinge), ensuring sustainable local ownership and digital empowerment for the Chepang community.
The network was officially handed over to Chairperson Raj Kumar Malla and Vice Chairpersastam Ton Banhing by President Bikram Shrestha in the presence of Ward No. 5 Chairperson, Hari Bahadur Praja, and Ward No. 6 Chairperson, Aakal Bahadur Muktan. Additionally, the program was attended by key community representatives, including both schools: Shri National Secondary School, Siligen, Kankada, and Shri Praja Jagriti Secondary School, Chainpur, Makawanpur principals, local leaders, and residents, who expressed their commitment to utilizing the network for education, communication, and economic development.
Speaking at the event, Chairperson Raj Kumar Malla emphasized the transformative impact of the network, stating:
"For the first time, our community has direct access to the internet, bridging the digital divide and opening new opportunities for education, health, and livelihood."
The Nepal Internet Foundation, with support from various partners, including the Internet Society, initiated the Chepang Community Network to provide reliable and affordable internet access, laying out 30 km of fiber cable with computers, solar power, and Wi-Fi hotspots to marginalized and remote areas. The network infrastructure ensures enhanced digital connectivity for schools, local ward offices, and households, promoting socio-economic growth and digital literacy. Additionally, an additional “Eak Abhiyan” team, in collaboration with Saugat Art Nepal, also completed a mural wall art and painting program at both schools.
Moving forward, Nepal Internet Foundation will continue to support the community with technical training, sustainability planning, and digital literacy programs. The event marks a significant milestone in Nepal’s efforts toward inclusive and community-driven internet access, reinforcing the belief that connectivity is a fundamental right for all.
